Without exfoliating our skin can look dull, flaky and dry. Exfoliating regularly unclogs pores, prompts a quicker cell turnover and allows for better absorption of moisturisers and treatment products.

There are many exfoliators on the market today, so knowing what will work best for your skin type is key.

Granular/Physical Exfoliators:

What Are They?

Physical exfoliators contain tiny granules that work to remove dead skin cells. They require users to physically scrub the skin. Powder exfoliants are grouped into this category, and are gentler than your usual granular scrubs. As tempting as it is to over scrub your skin to clean it this will only cause irritation on the skin, so try and keep the pressure even on all areas of your face.

Who Are They For?

Granular exfoliants are best for those with normal/combination or dry skin types. Powder exfoliants are great for sensitive skins.

Chemical/Non-Granular Exfoliants:

What Are They?

Chemical exfoliators are non-granular and non-abrasive. A chemical reaction between the skin and the exfoliators active ingredients help to remove dead skin cells. Ingredients include Alpha/Beta Hydroxy acids, Lactic Acid (perfect for sensitive skins), Glycolic Acid (clears blocked pores and removes hyperpigmentation), Salicylic Acid (great for acne-prone skin), Retinol (increases collagen production and evens out the skin tone), Citric Acid and Malic Acid, which polish and refine the skin.

Who Are They For?

As these are non-abrasive they’re perfect for sensitive and oily skins as well as more delicate older skin that are easily irritated.

A Word Of Warning: Over-exfoliating can strip the skin of its natural oils, causing it to produce more and result in breakouts. Frustrating to say the least. Other side effects of over-exfoliating include redness and peeling.

How regularly do you exfoliate your skin, if at all? Tell us all about it in the comments box below!
