Taking the “Ouch!” Out of Sensitive Teeth

Many of us have experienced it… it’s that pain that makes you want to jump right out of your skin when you bite into something ice cold or take a sip of warm coffee. But, what causes this awful, shrieking pain? This sensitivity arises because the protective enamel has worn away leaving the nerve-filled dentin exposed.

Sensitivity is caused by a number of things:

1.Brushing too enthusiastically can actually be bad for your teeth (who knew?)! Forceful brushing can actually wear your enamel away!
2.Eating and drinking acidic or sugary food and beverages.
3.Dental cavities.
4.Gum disease.
5.Grinding your teeth.

How you can sort out your sensitive pearly whites:
1.Brush and floss every day, but ensure you use a soft toothbrush and brush gently and thoroughly.  Also, make sure you replace your toothbrush regularly as old, worn bristles can also damage the gums and enamel.
2.Cut out the red wine, soft drinks and fruit juices! If you can’t cut them out all together, drink them through a straw as this minimises contact with the teeth. Not so sure if drinking red wine through a straw would be a great idea though! Cut down on sugary and acidic food too.
3.Visit the dentist if you have a persistent problem with sensitive teeth. You may have a cavity that needs filling or it may be that you have developed gum disease.
4.If you grind your teeth at night, get a mouth guard. If you also grind during the day, relax your jaw a little.
5.Try a toothpaste specially designed for sensitive teeth like one of Sensodyne’s range of products. If that doesn’t work, your dentist may be able to assist with a desensitising gel or rinse.
