The Halloween celebrations are here and with everyone ready to get their freak on, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to talk about “Mutton dressed up as lamb”. This in turn is as frightening as most Halloween costumes out there, except this term is something that we see living and breathing every day…

For those of you who are wondering exactly what “Mutton dressed up as lamb” means allow me to explain. You know you get those more “mature” ladies out there that are seen walking around in a top that even you at your young tender age would find a bit risky. They might be wearing such low cut jeans that errrrrr actually gives you an appreciation for “mom jeans”! Perhaps you’ve seen them walking around with bleached hair and pig tails- yes I have seen this often and while doing so they sucking on a lollipop- classy! How about hot pants combined with an orange fake tan. CRINGE!!  I really am finding this more terrifying than Halloween itself.  Their makeup comes in all shades of the rainbow- I’m talking bright purple eye shadows with eyelashes that are so noticeably fake or lipstick that made Barbie popular…  It’s out there ladies, maybe you are even guilty of it?

What this term basically means is an older woman dressed in a style that is more suitable for a much younger woman.  Dare I put face to the name so you can get a better picture? Think Donatella Versace, Pamela Anderson (not Baywatch Pamela) Cher, Aaaaaah What a nightmare. We are all for older ladies looking after themselves and wanting to have a healthy fit bod, or bronzed skin but please show it off tastefully! There are ways to be absolutely alluring for your suited age without flaunting bits and pieces that should be nicely packed away instead! You can even wear bright colours when it comes to makeup but this has to be done in an appropriate way unless you are trying to scare people on Halloween!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  

Here are some tips on how to wear your makeup with class:
Foundation:
Always wear a foundation that is suited for your skin tone. Many older women still use the same foundation they used 10 years ago. However, your skin changes not only yearly, but seasonally. Less is more as you age so it’s important to use only a small amount of product on your face. In winter months, you may need a creamy formula. In summer months you may find your skin becomes oily and a tinted moisturizer will do.

Concealers:
As we get older we all want to hide the dark circles under our eyes, but once again ladies, less is more.  If you pile on the concealer under the eyes, it will sit right into your lines. Use a very small amount and blend in well for a natural, flawless look.

Eye shadows:
The shimmers, frosts and most certainly glitters have to be tossed away! These products should only be used on young, plump skin but for 40+ skin they end up accentuating all your fine lines and wrinkles. Rather use eye shadows that are natural in colour such as light browns with a matte finish.

Lipstick:
A lipstick that looked great on you 20 years ago does not mean it is still suitable for you now.  Opt for colours that brighten your face and compliment your makeup look. Unless you have dark skin and plump lips, I recommend staying away from super dark lipstick, which ages everyone. A shade or 2 darker than your natural lip colour always works best. Also remember to use a lip liner before to keep your lipstick from running.

Blush:
Find blushes that add a youthful glow to your skin with peach or pink undertones. Stay away from blushes with too much frost or shimmer as these age your skin. Opt for matte blushes and make sure you blend well.

Eyelashes:
Mascara immediately creates a more youthful look so make sure you apply it to even the little ones but don’t overdo it. There is nothing worse than seeing clumps from mascara that hasn’t been applied properly. One or two coats of mascara should be enough to create an opened eye effect.

Blend,Blend,Blend:
The secret to makeup application is to make it look absolutely flawless, as if you aren’t wearing any. Your foundation needs to be blended in such a way that there are no tell-tale lines at your chin and neck. Your brows should be shaped naturally and not obviously painted on. Your blush should be just a pop of colour and eye shadows should also be blended in beautifully. With a good set of makeup brushes and some practice, your makeup technique can be perfected.
